Passenger hurt
as Jeep rolls
A Washington man has been charged with driving under the influence in an accident about 12:30 a.m. Saturday which left his passenger with extensive facial injuries.
According to Trooper H.A. Newlin, Janies Carroll Racer III, 21, was driving his 1983 Jeep CJ-7 north op, Route 024 in Harris Hollow when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road and overturned.
A passenger, John “Lucky” McCoy, 20, also of Washington, suffered severe facial injuries and w as taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville by the Washington VFD’s Advanced Life Support ambulance. Because of weather conditions, the hospital's Pegasus medevac helicopter was unable to fly to the scene.
Kathryn Johnson, of the hospital’s media relations office, said Tuesday afternoon that Mr. McCoy is still hospitalized in fair condition.
After investigating the accident. Trooper Newlin placed the DUI charge against Racer.
Trooper G.W. Dawson placed reckless driving charges against Donald R. Tester, 40, whose address is listed as Route 1, Box 249A. Sperryville, after a Sunday morning accident in Culpeper County.
According to Trooper Dawson, Tester was being chased by Culpeper town and county police on Route 15 south of Culpeper when he lost control of his 1982 Datsun two-door. The car ran off the left side of the road, struck an embankment, flipped several times and threw Tester out before landing on its top.
Tester was transported to Culpeper Memorial Hospital by the Culpeper County Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was later transferred to UVa. Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit, Mrs. Johnson said Tuesday.
Trooper Dawson estimated that Tester’s car was traveling at about 100 miles an hour when he lost control. According to Culpeper Police Chief C.B. Jones, town police had originally attempted to stop Tester for speeding when he attempted to elude them.
On Wednesday morning, Trooper Dawson said that Tester actually lives on Route 15 in Culpeper County, not far from where the accident occured, but still had his old Sperryville address on his driver’s license.
