He schooled her once on Aylor’s course, hunted her the Thursday before the race, and ran Saturday. “I knew she was athletic and she’s a good jumper, so I thought I’d try it," he said.
Another of Osier’s horses, Shame No More, trained by Pete Aylor, ran in the first division of the second race, five-eighths mile on the turf. Dot Smithwick’s Uncle Reg won it, surging to the lead shortly after the start and widening his margin as the race progressed.
“He ran his heart out,” said jockey Nelson Gunnell about the horse’s performance. “We went out to the front and stayed there,” he said. The pair was four lengths ahead of the second-place winner, Quotrek with Greg Ryan.
“We didn’t come up agaiast anything too heavy,” said Gunnell, who has won the race^aJUtimes and been second twice.
Gunnell’s newly acquired mare, Katherine, raced in the second division and came in second. “We started out five lengths behind,” said Gunnell about the Llangollenbred horse who could not catch up to David Bourke on Sea Legend, who crossed the finish line by a neck.
