the nation’s 12 million high school students. About 75 percent of the country's secondary schools honor their top scholars by nominating them to Who’s Who. Students are nominated by faculty members, administrators, national youth groups and churches on the basis of their academic performance and extracurricular activities.
Final selection to the directory is based on academic achievements and extracurricular interests. Traditionally, 99 percent of the students in the guide carry a grade-point average of “B” or better, and 97 percent will continue their studies in college.
The honorees are also eligible for more than $65,000 in scholarships, and participate in an annual opinion poll of teen-age attitudes.
The two directories, published by Educational Communications Inc. of Lake Forest, 111., are the largest publications recognizing academic achievement in the country. They are distributed to high schools, colleges and universities, and public libraries across the nation.
