Initially, the truck-to-trainto-steamship service will involve three trains per week, each way, a total of'sfx per week traveling between the inland port and the Hampton Roads terminals. Each train will consist of 60 spine car platforms with approximately 78 containers per run.
The 161-acre site shares a common property boundary with the Norfolk Southern Railway of more than 1,400 feet. Five 3,000foot rail tracks on the VIP directly connect with the Norfolk Southern System.
Virginia International Terminals Inc. a non-stock, non-profit corporation created by the Virginia Port Authority in 1982 to operate the state-owned terminals at Newport News, Norfolk and Portsmouth will operate the inland port initially employing 12 people. Additional employment in the Front Royal/Warren County area will include related truck, brokerage, and steamship personnel.
It is expected that the facility will serve to draw new companies, as well as new development opportunities to the Front Royal/Warren County area, with industries and business seeking to gain access to the worldwide markets available through more than 70 shipping lines now calling at the Ports of Virginia. Shipping lines and shippers now using the Ports of .Virginia will be able to offer their customers additional service and cost savings through the inland facility.
