Rappahannock County farmers who have not applied for assistance on their 1988 disaster-affected crops still have time to do so. Linda Henry, Executive Director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, reminds farmers that the deadline is March 31 for filing applications on crop production loss caused by drought, hail, excessive moisture or a condition caused by these perils.
To compensate producers for their 1988 crop losses, Ms. Henry said the Disaster Assistance Program will provide payments on most commercially-grown crops to all eligible producers. Farmers why lost more than 35 percent of their crop production during the disaster may be eligible for assistance.
She also reminded farmers of the emergency provision under the disaster program that allows farm program participants who received advance payments for the annual 1988 w heat and feed grain programs to retain that part of the advance payment which represents loss of crop production up to 35 percent of their normal production. To be eligible, producers must sign up under the Disaster Assistance Program.
According to Ms. Henry, 20 farmers in the county had applied for disaster payments as of Feb. 24. *
