RICHMOND — Americans are burying themselves under a mountain of garbage, said Tina Hobson, Executive director of Renew America, a group which released their annual “State of the State” report around the country last week.
"When the volume of municipal waste has increased more than twice as fast as the country’s population, then it’s obviously time to move beyond the ‘disposable society’ mentality," said Hobson.
Virginia legislators made some steps toward change this session, passing eight out of 10 recycling-related bills introduced this year. Bills requiring local governments to make provisions in their comprehensive land-use plan for recyling centers and to develop recycling plans passed.
In addition, a 50-cent surcharge will be placed on new vehicle tires in order to establish a research fund for tire recycling.
However, the General Assembly killed a bill that established Statewide recycling centers and provided financial incentives for participants. Also, a bill requiring a deposit on soft-drink containers and wine and liquor bottles failed before ever reaching the Senate floor.
