placement vehicle in the next school budget. “This creates another slot in the motor pool we will eventually have to replace,” Mr. Lane said.
Mr. McCarthy said that in the past the county had had to borrow Chairman Gilkey’s pickup truck or someone else’s van. “I don’t see how we can afford to let it go out of the county system,” he added.
The board agreed to have Mr. McCarthy and Mr. Luke prepare an ordinance relating to cable television franchises for the county. Mr. McCarthy said he had been approached by two individuals about providing cable TV in the county, and Mr. Gilkey had also been approached.
Mr. McCarthy noted that the experience of other localities has been that residents who want cable service could put tremendous pressure on the governing body to get a franchise approved. After the franchise is granted however, sometimes the cable company becomes unwilling to extend service or raises the rates dramatically. The supervisors agreed it: would be better to be ready with an ordinance before such problems arise.
In other actions, the board:
• agreed to advertise for the position of gypsy moth coordinator and interview candidates next month.
• heard that Mr. McCarthy and Col. Bingham will attend the Department of Transportation's allocation hearing for the district’s sixyear plan in Culpeper April 12 and agreed to have a hearing on secondary road funding and improvements in the evening after its April meeting.
• agreed to keep the Social Services Board at its present size of three members.
• decided to postpone the scheduling of budget work sessions until the April meeting.
• authorized Mr. McCarthy to accept the low bid for repairs to the buildings in the courthouse complex.
• agreed to pay one more month for street lights in Sperryville and to send Piedmont District Supervisor Charles K. “Pete” Estes as a committee of one to talk to the merchants and people of Sperryville about taking over future bills.
• agreed to consider the Capital Improvements Plan and amendments to the Comprehensive Plan at the April meeting.
