Washington’s birthday bash
The Town of Washington will celebrate its 240th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 19 with an evening of music, food and fun on Gay St. in front of the courthouse complex. Beginning at 5 p.m. there will be volleyball for the adults and games for the children. At 6 p.m., the bluegrass band New Liberty will perform, followed by the Cross Country band at 8 p.m. There will be dinners available, featuring barbecue, hot dogs and hamburgers, beer, wine and sodas. There will be a $2 admission charge for those over 12 years of age. All proceeds will benefit the Washington Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Probing China’s unrest
Next Thursday, Aug. 24, RAAC will present a special program featuring two people who were in China during the height of the recent unrest. Tracy Mannon was a teacher at Beijing University who had personal contact with some of the students involved in the protests. She will present slides she took and talk about her experience. Jim Blubaugh is a State Department diplomat who was in China as the leader of a U.S. Government inspection team. He was ordered to leave on the Friday evening before government troops massacred students early the next morning. Following short talks by both guests, there will be a question and answer session with the public. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Gay St. Theatre. The Rappahannock County Library announced this week that it has hired Diane E. Green as its new librarian. She will begin work Sept. 1. Mrs. Green received her Masters Degree in Library Science at Louisiana State University and has 10 years experience in schools and public libraries. She and her husband live inWarrenton.
