“Mr. Wingfield has been here so many years he instinctively knows where people are,” School Board Chairman Beverly Massie said. “We need to have more publicity so people will be more aware and encourage the public to be more cooperative,” she said.
Spread out over the next three years the county will receive more than $1,000 for each school-aged child in sales tax revenues, Mrs. Piper explained.
Earlier the School Board had received a tour of the new high school facilities. They visited the new computer lab, outfitted with Apple Macintosh computers donated by the Potomac Edison Company. There they were greeted by one of the computers itself, with a talking voice which welcomed each member by name to the computer lab.
To assist the county’s teachers in mastering these new teaching aids, Dr. Gangel told the board that two courses will be offered to teachers through Lord Fairfax Community College, each for two credits. One will teach how to use the Macintosh computers and will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-7:30 p.m. for five weeks. The other will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the same times, also for five weeks, but will focus on using the Apple GS computers that Potomac Edison donated to the elementary school.
The board also visited the electronic classroom which will be used to teach Latin and Advanced Placement English by television. The students will be hooked up by telephone to the teacher and will send in their homework by way of a fax machine.
