In addition, police say they are concerned that the mandated changes, if adopted, would cause financial strain, particularly on smaller, rural departments, which don’t have staffs large enough to devote a lot of time to press requests.
“The legislators have not sat down and figured how much these changes are going to cost the police,” said Sgt. Don Moore, Loudoun County Sheriffs Department. “We have yet to hear from rural sheriffs who probably aren’t aware of these developments.”
Moore also criticized the committee for having too much of a suburban perspective in examining changes he said won’t necessarily work in rural areas.
For instance, Moore said disclosing a theft committed on an unspecified block in the city is usually sufficient to protect the victim’s identity.
In contrast, Moore said information limited to identifying only the route number of a fapn that has been robbed is more than enough to let people know who the farmer is.
“Anonymity in a group doesn’t exist out in the country,” Moore said. “I’m a great believer in the press. But if a mandate to release information later impedes an investigation, I’m going to be one unhappy
