mite” Ward brought it under control.
Ward was not injured seriously by the bullet, which narrowly missed his spinal cord. Hospital sources said he was operated on in the emergency room and released later that day.
The car came to rest right in front of the home of David and Regina Dodson, who were away at the time.
"We were on vacation, and when I came home someone said. Hey, 1 saw your house on television.' We’ve found surgical gloves and gauze on the road by the driveway," he said.
Dodson said he was staying calm about the affair, but that his wife and family were shaken by it. “She said we should sell the house and get out of here,” he said. “It’s kind of freaky, right in front of your home.”
Mrs. Powers said she was upset that the bloody gloves and gauze were left on the road. “I didn’t like the bloody gloves and gauze,” she said. “It was really disgusting. Channel 7 even showed the bloody gauze blowing in the wind. They should have picked it up with the rest of the trash.”
Police are actively searching for clues in the case, even stopping cars at Opal during morning rush hour to ask for tips.

“We’ve been very fortunate so far that we haven’t seen a drug-related shooting already,” said Lynn. “We’ve all been aware that it w'as just a matter of time before violence touched Fauquier County.”
“The situation has apparently reached from the district to the Charlottesville area,” said Lynn, “and Fauquier, of course, is right between them.”
“It’s bad enough that we have to watch this stuff on television every night. We won’t be able to keep it out of here if they think they can get away with murder,” said Mrs. Power.
