is pleased with the results of the effort this year, and expects at least 20 farmers to participate next season. “There is widespread interest in this program, both from the grocers and the farmers,” said Ms. Nesbitt-Habib. “It is clear that had we started earlier in 1989, we would have served many more farmers this summer,” she added.
Ms. Nesbitt-Habib indicated that the VABF is working toward building a consistently high quality supply of organic food for consumers, while encoraging farmers to take the market advantage that organic production offers. “We want to give both consumers and farmers the assurance that the food is really organically produced,” she said, adding, “That’s what ‘VABF Certified Organic’ means.”
VABF is a 13-year-old' membership organization that caters to the needs of organic farmers and gardeners in the state with about 300 members statewide.
