Mr. McCarthy said the only question remaining is the orientation of the building’s peaked roof. The ARB members agreed to allow him to return with the county’s plan afterconsulting with Mr. Biegel.
The ARB made one other change to Mr. Biegel’s plans, swapping his round window between the addition’s twin chimneys for a square one. The architect had explained that he chose the round window to carry on similar features found on the Washington Baptist Church and the courthouse.
“The round window had a strong appeal,” Mr. O’Connell acknowledged, “until I looked at the rest of the building. It’s extremely simple. The eye is drawn to the window, and it might read new rather than a small square window, unadorned. His idea was an interesting one, but this is a much more simple structure.”
