According to press accounts, Mrs. Gordon and her family had been threatened prior to the shooting. Mrs. Gordon was described as a former drug abuser Police aren’t talking about details of the investigation, but residents of the Fauquier County hamlet known as Billington are, and it has scared them.
“We’re all panicking, saying, ‘Are they still around-, are they going to come after us?’,” said Catherine Powers, who lives with her family directly across from the crime scene.
Mrs. Powers said she didn’t understand why Ward and Mrs. Gordon didn’t hide once they were threatened, or how they could end up 50 miles from D.C. without knowing they were targets.
“I heard that a woman saw and heard the whole thing, but she doesn’t want to get involved,” she said. “If she saw something, I say she should report it.”
She was at home last Thursday before 7:30 a.m., when “an elderly, clean-shaven man wearing a beeper” knocked on her door.
The man called the murder in as an accident because the window was smashed in. The Remington Rescue Squad and State Police personnel arrived shortly thereafter. Mrs. Powers said she watched rescue squad workers administer CPR for 15 minutes before they gave up.
