Bird study course
The first class session of the six weeks fall bird study course will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church from 9-10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31. Three class sessions will alternate with three field trips to local places of interest to bird students. Beginners and more advanced students are welcome. The group maximum will be 15 and the fee of $20 covers the course and field trips. Call Betsy Thomas to register (9375063, evenings).
Washington's birthday bash
The town of Washington will celebrate its 240th birthday on Saturday, Aug. 19 on Gay St. at the courthouse, with volleyball, children’s games, and other events beginning at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m. the bluegrass band New Liberty will perform, followed at 8 p.m. by the Cross Country band. There will also be hotdogs, hamburgers, barbecue, roasted com on the cob, beer, wine and soft drinks. There will be a $2 admission charge for all those over 12 years of age. All proceeds will benefit the Washington Volunteer Fire Department.
Heart Association board to meet
The Board of the Rappahannock Unit of the American Heart Association will meet Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church. This will be its first meeting with the new Area Coordinator, Jane Lienesch of Charlottesville. All members are urged to attend.
Program on Chinese unrest
RAAC will sponsor a special program next Thursday, Aug. 24, focusing on the recent unrest in Communist China. Tracy Mannon was a teacher at Beijing University who had personal contact with some of the students involved in the protests. Jim Blubaugh, a county resident and RAAC board member, was in China as the leader of a State Department inspection team. He was ordered to leave the country the night before the Chinese Army moved on the students. Following short talks by both guests and slides taken by Ms. Mannon, there will be a question and answer and discussion with the audience. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Gay St. Theatre. There will be no admission charge.
