Hugh S. Atkins
Hugh “Dick” Smith Atkins, 79, of Sperryville, died Dec. 1, at Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service was conducted Dec. 3, in the Sperryville Cemetery, by the Rev. Merlin Shorb and the Rev. Tom Von Fange.
Mr. Atkins was bom in Rappahannock County, Feb. 26, 1910, son of the late Thomas and Maggie Atkins. He was a farmer and antique dealer in Rappahannock County. He was a member of the Sperryville United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are his widow Ruth Frazier Atkins; two sons, Robert E. Atkins of New London, Pa., and Hugh Smith Atkins Jr. of Chester, Pa.; one daughter, Mary Sue Atkins Cooke of Culpeper; one brother, Herman Atkins of Luray and four grandchildren, Kevin Atkins of Pa., Wendy Atkins of Tenn., Shawn Atkins of Arlington and Michael Atkins of Pa.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad or Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department.
Pallbearers were Elmer Atkins, Pete Estes, Frank Coffey, Jimmy Wayland, Eric Edens, Nelson Nethers, Julian Brown and Carson Johnson.
