“One huge problem in public education is that the kids in it don’t do things that are real,” she said. “What they go home to is real.” She gave as an example a ditto sheet the children received. On it they were supposed to circle the words, such as Aunt Mary, Uncle Ben, and Washington that were supposed to be capitalized. “If the class, as part of a writing assignment, were to write down all the names of their aunts and uncles and use them in a story, they would have more fun, and they would understand why they are supposed to capitalize people’s names,” she said.

Ms. Marshall suggested that there should be more emphasis on teachers sharing ideas with each other, on involving parents and on using older children to teach younger ones.
