With two pre-season scrimmages under their belts, the Panthers began their basketball season Wednesday at home.
Coach Gary Leake called the two scrimmages invaluable in the team’s progress toward opening night.
Though the Panthers lost their first outing against AA-rated Warren County on Nov.~28, Coach Leake said his team learned from their mistakes, making the experience more valuable, perhaps, than even a win would have been. “We played it like a first scrimmage, using it to detect our strengths and weaknesses. It accomplished that purpose.”
The Panthers lost by eight points, but Coach Leake explained part of the difference was due to Warren County playing its top eight players, while Rappahannock played all 16 of its squad’s players. “He was trying to cement his starters, while I wanted to see what everyone could do in a game situation.”
The game was videotaped, and 1 1/2 hours of the next day’s practice was spent reviewing the game film. The review is “a very important part of learning,” Coach Leake explained, “as important as participation in the practice drills.”
