In 1988, despite 46,044 arrests for drinking and driving, there were 18,084 alcohol-related crashes, resulting in 14,172 injuries and 522 deaths. State Police also point out that at least 338 of the drivers involved in alcohol-related crashes were 17 years of age or less and that another 1,106 were under age 21, the legal age for possessing and consuming alcoholic beverages in Virginia.
