Mrs. Massie asked the board members if they wanted to have more discussion on the budget later in the meeting or have a separate meeting.

“I’m satisfied with the way the budget was presented already,” Wakefield District representative Paul Nichols said. “It is lean. That is to be expected.”

Mrs. Massie said that Hampton District representative Bryant Lee, who was not able to attend the meeting, had let her know he supported the budget as presented.

Stonewall-Hawthom District representative John Tole said, “I think we should pass it. It’s a miraculous budget, but I fear we will not get through the year with it. It’s the best we can do.”

Piedmont District representative Dorothy Butler made the motion to approve the budget. The motion passed unanimously.

The budget is $19,312 lower than the current budget and calls for an increase of $52,669 in local funds.

It calls for an increase of about three percent in salaries for most employees including board members. The salary increases for top administrators are less than three percent.

Following an executive session, the board accepted “with regrets” the resignations of elementary school principal Bernie Chesshir and high school physical and earth science teacher Tom Von Fange effective June 30.

Mr. Chesshir has been principal at the elementary school for three years after serving one year as assistant principal at the high school. This is Mr. Von Fange’s second year at the high school. Several years ago he taught shop classes there.
