This letter is in regard to an incident that happened to my daughter.
She had decided to walk to the store at the end of Route 729, which is generally referred to as the Ben Venue Road. Upon hearing dogs barking, she became aware of a Rottweiller and a mixed-breed dog pounding down the driveway towards her.
All the while the dogs were approaching they were growling and barking. My daughter was petrified. P'eing an animal lover herself, she is generally not afraid of dogs. This proved to be an exception to the rule.
She quickly came to a conclusion: she better put distance between the two. Running, she started towards the direction from which she came. Fortunately, for herself as well as the owner, she made it.
My daughter called the dogs’ owner immediately. He felt that the incident was really of no importance. Concerning the Rottweiller, he stated, “that the dog w'as merely a puppy and wouldn’t bite.” The dog didn’t bite, because he wasn’t given the opportunity. It is interesting to know, that the owner’s son and stepdaughter claim that the dogs will bite.
Hopefully, the owner is aware of the consequences should those dogs bite someone. May he also be aware of certain county ordinances; which states that the owner is responsible for the confinement of his dogs. It is the owner’s responsibility to have such dogs chained or fenced in. Those who choose to walk down the state maintained roads has the right to request that their safety be protected. If you, as the pet’s owner, cannot provide that safety, then maybe the dog warden can.
