Sophomore Emma Swatman returns this season after being voted second-team all-Bull Run shortstop. Coach Leake said she is a preseason favorite to make first-team this year. “Emma probably has the best glove of any girl I’ve ever seen,” said the coach.
Page County is expected to contend for the district title, but Mrs. Leake said she would be satisfied with making the post-season tournament.
Tourney berths go to the top four finishers, but last year’s 8-6 team (76 in the district) came in fifth, one spot from post-season action.
Seniors are Heidi Maeyer at third base, Edna Shanks at second and pitcher, Danish exchange student Mette Eilstrup in the outfield and Diana Hudson in the outfield.
Miss Boddie and catcher-outfielder Angela Pullen are returning juniors, and Heather Coffey, another junior, is slated for outfield duty. Mrs. Leake said Miss Pullen is expected to be one vf the team’s leading hitters.
Miss Swatman, starting pitcher Susan Payne and outfielder Lori Paratore are the returning sophomores. Miss Paratore is sick is expected to miss several weeks, said the coach.
