In the junior division, for students in sixth through eighth grades, Nathan Flinchum was the local winner in physics. His project demonstrated the effect of a column of water in creating water pressure. Shannon Eastham and Van Carney were runners-up.
Sarah Riley was the local junior winner in chemistry. Her project was a study of testing common household products to determine which were acids and bases using a testing agent she made from boiling red cabbage. Sara Klatko and Katie Heberle were runners-up.
Jim Clark won the Earth science or ecology junior award for study of heat storage in his passive solar home. Willie Eastham and Sam Riley were runners-up.
In life science Sharee Dunagen was the local winner for her project of growing bacteria that she had collected from her hands, doorknobs and trash cans. Holly Gangel was runner-up.
A local winner for model building was Mike Passieux. - His project, called “Hang Saddam Hussein for War Crimes,” involved rolling a marble down a ramp, which moved a lever attached to a wheel, tightening a string passing around various objects and ultimately tied to a screw. The tension pulled the screw loose, dropping a platform supporting a small military figure with a very bushy mustache. Without the platform the figure dropped to the end of a string around its neck.
