The Rappahannock High varsity baseball team opened its regular season with an 18-8 pasting of Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal Saturday.
The game had originally been scheduled as a scrimmage, but when the Panthers arrived at RandolphMacon the coaches agreed to play it as a regular-season match, according to RCHS coach Mike Tupper.
The win puts the team record at 1-0, 0-0 in the district, and already ties last season’s 1-15 squad for victories.
“We did real well,” said Coach Tupper. ‘We had only had a couple of days outside, and because the basketball team was in the tournament we had only settled on positions last week.”
“It’s a young team, and we’re just working on building the program this year,” said Mr. Tupper. On the 18-member team, only three are seniors and seven are freshmen and sophomores.
“The future looks good, but learning the fundamentals are, of course, the key,” said Mr. Tupper.
On Saturday, the Panthers scored 18 runs on 11 hits, had four errors and left nine men on base. Rappahannock benefited from some erratic pitching by Randolph-Macon, said the coach.
