Coach Renee Leake has high hopes for her Rappahannock High varsity girls’ softball team this year.
“I’ll be disappointed if we don’t finish fourth in the district or higher this year,” said Mrs. Leake, the only coach the four-year-old program has ever had.
In addition to several returning players who were all-Bull Run District last year, the team has extra motivation, said Mrs. Leake: a new field.
Thanks to extensive grading done by Steve and Nancy Leake (no relation), the softball team will play its games at the same time as the baseball team, but at the other end of the school.
“The new field is the key motivator that’s been getting us going,” said Mrs. Leake. “This year the girls are really putting a lot of pride into it.”
Like the varsity baseball team, the softball squad is young, with only four seniors on the 14-person roster.
With their opening game against Luray at home still a few weeks away, Mrs. Leake has been running the Lady Panthers through spring training, settling on final cuts this week.
Of the returning players, junior Sherron Boddie is perhaps the most accomplished, having been voted first-team all-Bull Run District two years running.
