Hospice begins

Seventy-four volunteers donated more than 1,810 hours and logged 16,862 miles to serve a record-breaking 71 hospice patients in Madison, Orange, Culpeper, and Rappahannock last year, according to Hospice’s director, Tina Weaver. Hospice of the Rapidan’s special volunteers join a nationwide network of 64,300 hospice caregivers in 1,659 hospice programs.
Eighteen home care volunteers are needed each week to provide emotional support, bereavement care, transportation, financial counseling, and respite care to hospice patients and their families.
Ms. Weaver said, “Hospice^ a United Way agency, is lacking an adequate number of home care volunteers. Hospice families in all counties must often wait for available volunteers. Office volunteers are needed to answer the phone, help with mailings, file, or make copies. Hospice always needs volunteers willing to assist with fund raising events.”
With an increasing number of patients enrolled in hospice care for longer periods of time and decreased hospital days, volunteers are vital. Volunteers can make the difference between a patient remaining' at home or not.
Rosemary Sheatsley, Hospice’s education coordinator, will conduct volunteer training classes the evenings of Feb. 21 and 25 and all day Saturday, Feb. 23 at the hospice office in Culpeper. All sessions must be attended. Mrs. Sheatsley’s training receives excellent evaluations as being interesting and informative.
Volunteers receive continuing education. Volunteers donatlhg more than 1,000 miles or 100 hours during a year have their names inscribed on a plaque.
