an adjustment, but don’t make too great an adjustment,” Chairman Hubert Gilkey said.

Col. Luke said they had been recording land sales for properties already reassessed and most were selling for slightly more than their assessments.

He said they were using a base figure of $60 per square foot for wood construction compared to $37 four years ago.

“There are no cheap houses being built in Rappahannock any more,” he said. “The downside market means that houses are not moving as fast, but the price is not coming down.”

Mr. McCarthy reported that he had written confirmation that the Virginia Department of Transportation will no longer be responsible for putting up or maintaining signs with street names for the Enhanced 911 system. He said VDOT had adopted the policy because so many counties were going into E-911 now. He said the county would have to pick up the cost of installing and maintaining the signs, but that they would still have to meet VDOT standards.

From the audience, Sean Kilpatrick suggested that the supervisors appoint an “ad hoc” committee to finish the job of naming streets for the system. He suggested they also* adopt a policy of having a street, name continue straight even when the highway number changes.

Mr. Gilkey said the supervisors wanted to advertise the names suggested by the fire departments before appointing a committee.

The board adopted a resolution, to be sent to the county’s representatives and the governor supporting repeal of the Dillon Rule, which restricts the powers of local governments.

Gov. Wilder has indicated he might consider some relaxation of the Dillon Rule.

Mr. McCarthy also announced that VDOT would hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. June 27 at the Flint Hill firehall to hear testimony on taking property for widening a bridge on Route 729 near Flint Hill.

The supervisors reappointed Margaret Lee and Eileen Day to the Recreational Facilities Authority.
