Saying he thought the “economic environment” might never be favorable for central air conditioning in the schools, Superintendent David Gangel presented the School Board with a plan for phasing in window air coniditioners in the classrooms. \
At Tuesday night’s board meeting Dr. Gangel sai<) during the recent hot spell he and assistant superintend Aent Robert Chappell spent most of their time in the Classrooms monitoring temperatures. He said there was an eight-degree difference between the hottest and coolest classrooms.
Using the temperatures they recorded, he gave the board a list of areas to be air conditioned starting with the kindergarten and special education classrooms on the west side of the elementary school. The next highest priority would be science labs at the high school.
Kindergarten classrooms on the courtyard side at the elementary school would be next, with other classrooms on the west side with the fourth highest priority.
He said he had been getting more and more requests for summer programs and that he was considering summer school in the future for “at risk” students. He also said that the regional governor’s school could be held in Rappahannock if classrooms were air conditioned.
Dr. Gangel said it may be possible to start with two classrooms over the summer, and that the Parent Teacher Organization may be able to help with fundraising. “It’s possible to start in a small way and build on it,” he said.
Hampton District representative Bryant Lee suggested Dr. Gangel look into outside air conditioning units using ducts as well as window units.
Stonewall-Hawthom District representative John Tole asked about giving some priority to the high school auditorium.
Mr. Chappell said he had looked into that and it will cost $15,000 to $20,000 to air condition the auditorium.
In other action the School Board:
• Learned that the local schools will be included in the Xerox partnership and that the first training session for Rappahannock’s employees and representatives from other school systems included in the program will be June 17 through June 21.
• Received bids for two new school buses, but decided to seek further information before accepting a bid.
