While fresh vegetables are the desire, many have never picked their own veggies or fruit and damage growing vines or young trees in the process.
“Children can be the worst,” Mr. Hall said, adding many times adults can do as much damage.
“Sometimes you just can’t get people to pick their own too,” he said, adding last year several rows of green beans “wasted on the vines” due to lack of harvest.
“Some items do not lend themselves to be pick-your-own,” he said.
Mr. Call of Amissville echoed this, adding often in the hot summer consumers are less interested in pick-your-own and would rather have them “picked.”
Com, tomatos, cucumbers and vegetables with tender vines remain for the farmer to harvest.
“You’ve got to get in there and? get the stuff and get out,” Mr. Call^ said of these products, picked once* rippened on a daily basis. ,
“It’s hard to get anyone in this area to help with a harvest,” Mr.' Hall said, adding sometimes he Villi use “borrowed” migrant help for' harvest but often does the work him- i self.
Muskrat Haven Farm is large enough to warrant a farm manager and hired help.
“I have a young boy from Culpeper who helps each year,” Mr. Call said, adding the youth has takeni an interest in horticulture since his days helping on the farm.
