In cooperative learning the students are placed in groups of usually three or four students and titles are designated such as recorder, leader, encourager, and materials person. However, this time the group consisted of two student shoppers, one clerk, and a checker (the human calculator).
As the items to be purchased were placed on the check-out counter by the customer, the clerk called out the price as the checker wrote it down. The checker then added the next item’s price.
To this subtotal the third item’s price was added and, when finished, the paper became the receipt.
Each customer carried paper money and was required to count out the exact amount needed if possible. Of course the clerk was obligated to give back the correct change when necessary.
