“Last year we did 5,000,” he said, adding this year he only plans to sell 2,000 mums.
“You get a better price for pick-your-own produce over wholesale prices but, I would not say this way is more profitable. You have the cost of liability insurance that is a negative and farming is always a gamble,” Mr. Call said, adding last year crops were poor and total revenue worse. Mr. Hall admits he lost nearly $35,000 due to poor crops last year.
Besides his farm work, Mr. Call works full-time in D.C.
The 130-acre farm offers a variety of fresh items from the ususal strawberries and peaches to the more unusual straw, okra and even pumpkins.
His growing season includes 16 to 18 different items, changing as demand and seasons change.
