Interact Theatre Company presents the popular comic opera “The Pirates of Penzance” for one performance only at The Theatre at Washington, Va., at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3.
Interact, a professional theater company based in McLean, is currently staging the musical before sellout audiences in historic St. Mary’s City, Md.
Gilbert’s humorous lyrics and Sullivan’s blithe and tuneful music have made their Victorian operas successful the world over, and “The Pirates of Penzance” has been a favorite of British and American audiences ever since Gilbert and Sullivan wrote it in 1879.
It traces the life of a young man, Frederic, who was inadvertently apprenticed to a band of pirates at birth and seeks his freedom and a wife as his indenture ends. With wit and vigor, the musical tells of Frederic’s adventures and misadventures with the swashbuckling pirates, cooing maidens, a bumbling police troupe, and “the very model of a modern major general,” whose ward he wishes to marry.
