When I was a political reporter, nothing was more exhilirating than motoring through t^ie heart of Southside past peanut fields or stopping at country stores in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains as golden leaves rustled on a cool crisp October afternoon. Agriculture remains the state’s chief industry, though the farmers and the planters who used to take time out from the planting and the plowing to come to Richmond and guide the state’s political destiny are only a minor force these days.
