“We think it’s a historic gerrymandering and we’re pursuing it. They wiped out 20 percent of our representatives with the stroke of a pen,” Haner said.
The House plan places 15 Republican incumbents in districts with another incumbent Republican.
Haner said that nobody is sure when the suit will go to trial and that the caucus will decide this week whether it will ask for a court inj unction to stop elections in the new districts. ..
Though the suit remains active, the House quickly made only those changes necessary to satisfy the Justice Department and passed them along party lines, according to vote tallies.
The changes place majority leader Robert Ball Sr. (D-Richmond) in a new black-majority district.
The plan still does not please the American Civil Liberties Union and the Virginia chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
Both organizations urged the Justice Department and the House to create another new black-majority district in Southside.
State House members are eager to get the newr plan approved and in place in orfer to hold elections in the new districts this November.
