cuit (Fauquier and Loudoun are of course much larger), does not rate a full-time circuit court judge. The Fauquier judge, the Hon. W. Shore Robertson, handles most of Rappahannock’s cases.
“Over the last year we’ve seen an increase of 32 percent in the number of judge days,” said Ms. Bruce, further indication of the strained docket both in Rappahannock and statewide.
In addition to keeping records of all felony trials, the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office performs a number of other functions, including deed recordation, wills, marriage licenses, appeals from the lower courts, civil suit record-keeping, judgements, orders, bonds and corporate charters.
Despite the increase in caseload and complexity, the county portion of her budget has increased very little. Between 1977, the year she started, and this year, the county’s budget has increased from $1 million to about $5.5 million. The local portion of the Clerk’s Office budget, however, has gone from $14,000 to $28,000. She credits computers, the fact that she is a working clerk (rather than purely administrative) and being blessed with capable deputy clerks.
