It effectively cut off the old option of any one group of people being able to rig things to retain political dominance when their numbers did not justify such dominance.
Unfortunately, there are increasing signs that the demographically changed Virginia may, indeed, attract to its bosom some of the things that other states such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas have had for years — frequent political scandals, the art of the cynical political deal and a legislature that increasingly votes itself more compensation and perks and gravitates toward full-time status.
That is the price that must be paid for the onrushing era when an increasingly larger percentage of the population is composed of people bom outside the state and not raised on the old Virginia tradition.
As Scarlett O’Hara found out, once the wind has blown away the old, adjustments must be made for reality.
