“Most of our students receiving Chapter 1 services are in the program only a year or two,” he said.
Mr. Smith said there was also a teacher trained in “reading recovery” and another receiving training. In this program the teachers work one on one with first graders who have fallen behind in reading. They work with the students for a half hour a day for eight to 20 weeks.
This “early intervention” program is supposed to prevent problems in later years, he said.
He also said there is a teachers’ aide doing remedial work in reading with kindergarten students, but the school system could use trained volunteers for similar work with kindergartners who are having problems with math.
He said another program at the elementary school is “quick tutoring.” In this program remedial teachers and other teacher and administrative volunteers give short term help to students who are having trouble with a particular skill or assignment.
Mr. Smith said the citizens won’t see the “payoff” from these programs until the students are in high school. “You may not notice them as they go through high school because they won’t be failures,” he added.
