Polls conducted by the campaigns of Democrat Kay Slaughter and Republican George Allen both indicate the candidates are about even in the race to replace retiring incumbent U.S. Rep. D. French Slaughter Jr. in Congress.
Ms. Slaughter’s poll shows Mr. Allen with 30 percent, Ms. Slaughter with 27 percent, and 43 percent undecided. Mr. Allen’s poll has the two deadlocked at 36 percent.
John Howland, Ms. Slaughter’s press secretary, said the poll was a “pleasant surprise,” and attributed her success in the Republican-majority 7th Congressional District to his candidate’s Pro-life stand.
He also said her surname has provided her with unexpected name recognition. “She’s from an old 7th District family—it’s a name once they hear they remember it,” he said.
Jay Timmons, Mr. Allen’s campaign manager, said name recognition is “one of the things we said very early on would benefit her.” t
On the issue of abortion (Ms. Slaughter is Pro-choice and Mr. Allen won’t state an opinion), Mr. Timmons said Mr. Allen “doesn’t care to be labelled. Like most Americans, he doesn’t fit into one extreme or the other.”
