Darby makes
White House visit
Bob Darby, the Republican candidate for the House of Delegates, 31st District, joined other Virginia Republican candidates at the White House on Friday, Sept. 27, for a conference on America 2000, which is President Bush’s long-term strategy to achieve educational excellence by the year 2000.
The conference highlighted the substance of the president’s strategy and the progress that states and localities are making toward America 2000 goals.
Mr. Darby said that two key elements of the president’s strategy are at the center of his plan for the Fauquier, Warren, and Rappahannock school systems: the establishment of standards of knowledge in five core subjects (English, mathematics, science, history, geography), and development of achievement tests that will show how well students are meeting the standards.
Twenty-five states, including Maprland, but not including Virginia, have responded to the president’s call for a commitment to America 2000.
“I am disappointed that our governor has not made the commitment for Virginia, because I think the Commonwealth should be taking a leadership role,” Mr. Darby said.
If elected, he has said he will seek membership on the House Education Committee and pursue his plans for improving our public schools.
