Ms. Slaughter has attacked Mr. Allen for accepting contributions from British Petroleum in his Virginia House of Delegates races. Mr. Timmons said, “Any company or individual who has contributed to [Mr. Allen’s] campaign is looking to get government off his back. ”
Mr. Allen’s campaign, attempting to portray Ms. Slaughter as leftwing, issued a press release this week citing, in part, “. . .her support for Michael Dukakis over George Bush in 1988. .
In a debate aired on a Charlottesville radio station last week, Mr. Allen said, “Fortunately, the vast majority of the people of this area thought we needed a conservative Republican as president. And fortunately my candidate won and we are fortunate also that your liberal candidate did not win.”
What Mr. Timmons calls “the debate on the debates” continued this week, with the two camps no closer to deciding on a schedule. Mr. Timmons said he hoped for “at least" two debates.
Ms. Slaughter has said she will let the League of Women Voters determine the format and scheduling of televised debates. Mr. Timmons said he was not certain that any D.C. television stations will be willing to televise any debate, were it to be scheduled.
“I think we can set up at least two,” said Mr. Timmons, adding Mr. Allen wants to “do as many as we can.”
