‘Housesitter’ is movie

“Housesitter,” rated PG, starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Theatre at Washington, Va.

Martin, a Boston architect, while moping over the hometown girl after she snubs his marriage proposal, has a fling with a waitress (Hawn). Hawn, a compulsive con-artist, makes it impossible for Martin to discard her. She moves into the vacant dream house he built for his intended and tells everyone she’s Martin’s wife.

In coming weeks, The Theatre’s RAAC movies series will feature: “Mediterraneo,” Nov. 15, “Far and Away,” Nov. 22 and “Pinocchio,” Nov. 29. “Sixty paid attendees to this movie are needed for the movie to pay for itself. Everyone is urged to attend,” said a spokesperson.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced that compensation payments for disabled veterans will be increased by three percent, effective Dec. 1.

The cost-of-living allowance was included in legislation signed by President Bush Oct. 24, and the increase will be reflected in disability checks received in January, 1993.

Some two million veterans are affected, whose payments will range from $85 per month for a single veteran with a 10-percent disability rating to $1,730 for a * single veteran with a 100-percent disability.

Haunting Rappahannock

The Rappahannock Library’s First Friday series continues Nov. 6 with a program about old houses and those who are curious about the ghosts that might inhabit them.

Dot Mank has organized this program — which is not a children’s Halloween program — and will feature storytellers Elisabeth Johnson, Ted Chapman and Bob Scott. The storytellers will recount tales of hauntings in Rappahannock as well as in surrounding counties.

The program begins at 8 p.m. There is no admission charge, and there will be refreshments and an informal reception following the program. For information, contact the library, 675-3780.
