“What is that insect on my azalea?” “Is it time to prune my roses?” These are just a few of the questions you will be prepared to answer after finishing the Master Gardener program. A series of 17 workshops will be offered by the Cooperative Extension Service in Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties and the C-M-O-R Master Gardeners beginning Nov. 18.
This horticulture educational effort provides training on a variety of topics. Topics to be covered include vegetable production, wood ornamental, turfgrass, weed identification, soils, plant propagation, insects, pruning, pesticides and volunterism plus several others. In addition to the classes the learning will continue afterwards since each participant is expected to return at least 50 hours of volunteer service to Extension Service educational programs.
Each person who completes the course is expected to return at least 1/2 of these hours in direct support of Virginia Cooperative Extension horticulture programs. This would include answering walk-in and telephone questions at local Extension offices, setting up and manning Master Gardener exhibits, writing news articles and/or teaching others. Additional volunteer time can be performed in community service work projects.
This, the 6th class series for these counties, will meet from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Wednesdays starting Nov. 18 and continuing through March 24. Dec. 16 is the last class for 1992 with classes resuming Jan. 6. The location will vary between all counties expect Rappahannock. November and February classes will be held in Madison, December and March in Culpeper and January in Orange. Classes are als6 held in Fauquier County under the direction of Extension Agent Chuck Hoysa.
