Mrs. Brown said the articles about teen aged pregnancy in the Rappahannock News last summer got “a lot of attention. Students were saying what business is it of yours?” She said many students feel that as a guidance counsellor she should be concerned only with helping them schedule classes and get into college. “But it is our business,” she said. “With teenagers and premarital births, 73 percent will go on welfare; 71 percent will stay on at least four years. It is our business because we’re paying to support those children.”
Mrs. Sharp asked, “What do you think we can do to prevent this? It should start at home. Take every opportunity to talk to your children. If you’re not communicating, you can’t start with sex.” She recommended that parents pick up hand-outs on preventing teen pregnancy available in the back of the room.
Mrs. Brown suggested that parents try to keep their teens busy. “Know what they’re doing and who they’re doing it with,” she said. “A lot of girls are in very serious relationships very young. Girls in eighth to tenth grades are dating guys out of high school. High school boys are dating girls in the elementary school,” she added.
