Mrs. Sharp agreed saying, “There is much less stigma now with teen-aged pregnancy.” She says she even sees girls who are eager to get pregnant. Sometimes they see that as a way to get out of an troubled home situation, she said.
Mrs. Brown reported that surveys show even more girls than boys say they are pressured by their peers to be sexually active.
Mrs. Sharp said, “What we’d like to see is abstinence. It has all the advantages: no guilt, avoiding pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, waiting until they are in a commited relationship. It should be encouraged and stressed, but a lot of my clients are already sexually active. Some girls who are going steady feel they are in love.”
She said the health department has a family planning clinic in which girls are treated confidentially. The parents are not informed when their teenagers are treated. The clinic can provide a variety of birth control methods including Norplant, which will prevent pregnancy for five years. She noted that like birth control pills, however, it does nothing to stop transmission of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
