Mrs. Beker said nearly 45 per. cent of all the state’s children are in family day-care, full-time or after-school day-care. She defines family day-care as individuals operating a small business out of their homes.
“Some women have children and then take in a few more to earn money. Other times it’s family members taking care of nieces and nephews,” she said.
“The number of people doing -this is considerably higher in rural areas where there are basically no large-scale alternative, day-care centers, to family day. care,” she said.
She said in Fauquier County there are 4,702 children from infants to five years old who may need full-time care, but only 527 ftiU-time child-care slots.
