While rich in rolling green hills and all that accommodates the quiet life, Fauquier and other "rural” counties aren’t so rural that their working folk don’t need some urban amenities, such as day care, a growing need in single-parent families and when both parents work.
In an effort to increase the availability, quality and safety of family day-care, a Haywood, Va., firm has established the Comprehensive Child initiative to help day-care providers in the Northern Piedmont become licensed, get federal aid, receive free safety equipment and acquire trainings
The Soho Center, a non-profit organization that started in New York, serves Rappahannock, Fauquier, Culpeper, Orange, Albemarle, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Page and Rockingham counties.
According to Jeanna Gollobin Beker, Soho’s founder and director, she moved the firm from New York to Virginia to improve her own quality of life. Now she’s trying to help day-care operators improve theirs.
“I love it here. My husband and I wanted to live here and raise our family here. We knew these services would be needed in Virginia as well,” she said.
The Soho Center, which stands for Southern Hospitality, focuses on advising family daycare facilities instead of large day care centers.
