Piedmont United Way supports 30 organizations in its five-county region. The organizations include a food pantry, a day care center for seniors, literacy programs, youth clubs, legal services and a mediation center.
The Grace Miller Child Care center and Shadow Lawn Day Care for Seniors are two Warrenton agencies which receive assistance from the Piedmont United Way.
With Piedmont United Way, Bums said, area residents who work outside the county have a way to send their contributions on the job back to Fauquier County.
Last year, PUW received last year $39,863 from the combined federal campaign, which is the federal government’s United Way effort, and $29,304 from people who make workplace contributions as private companies.
“This way they can designate their dollars back to agencies in their community,” Bums said.
Bums said he and other PUW officials have been visiting local businesses to encourage the payroll deduction in the workplace.
Piedmont United Way, according to Bums, disapproves of coercive tactics in soliciting donations.
