Reagan carried the county in 1984 with 1,696 votes to Mondale’s 999 for 63 per eenLof the. vote. The percentage margin dropped slightly in 1MB when Bush carried the county with 62 per cent of the vote. *
This is only the second time since Truman defeated Dewey in 1948 that a Republican has not won a majority of the votes for president in Rappahannock County. The only other time was in 1964 when President Johnson carried Rappahannock County (and Virginia as well) against Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona.
From the farthest northern reaches of Maine to the Florida Keys, President George Bush’s support on the East Coast was limited to three contiguous states. Virginia threw in its lot with both Carolinas in holding down a small Republican enclave in a region that went strongly and predominantly for change and the Democratic Party, at least on the national level.
But was all for naught.
