Ruth Purnell of Washington and Timmy Favareau of Flint Hill were unong a group of fourth and fifth jraders visiting the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Oct. 13. The jroup made the day trip to Richmond from Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly.
' Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman objects brought to reality :he fifth grade’s study of ancient civilizations and the contents of the fourth grade’s Open Court literature text. The group concentrated their museum visit on the recently renovated Classical Court and the expanded Mary Morton Parsons Gallery, guided by a museum docent.
An art studio gave the young people the opportunity to create their own work. Inspired by the floor mosaic of “The Four Seasons,” the centerpiece of the Classical court, the students each made a mosaic to bring home to remember their museum visit.
After returning, Ruth commented on the mummy caskets, noting how they contained everything the person would need for the afterlife. Jimmy also was impressed by the caskets, especially the detail painted on the wood.
The group will make a second trip to the museum near the end of the year on their return from a scheduled three-day trip to Williamsburg.
