Roads, from clearing them of snow, to widening and paving, to determining responsibly for maintaining a right-of-way consumed much of the Board of Supervisors’ meeting Monday afternoon and evening.
At the afternoon session, the supervisors praised the efforts of VDOT in clearing the roads after the March snowstorm. Chairman Hubert Gilkey said, “We owe everybody at VDOT a round of applause and a pat on the back. It was a pretty super job.”
Resident engineer Robert Moore said the effort had cost about $50,000. He said about 25 people from outside the department had been called in to help, most of them working in Fauquier County. In addition, several local people were hired to help with the cleanup effort, he said.
He said the highway department workers started Friday night and didn’t finish until Wednesday. He noted that Rappahannock schools were open before those in surrounding counties.
Emergency Services Coordinator Dieter Kneupfer said he had discovered a snowmobile would be useful for emergency evacuations. He said he was looking into the cost of buying or leasing one when Robert Bridges offered to donate a snowmobile and trailer to the county. Col. Kneupfer said it needs a fuel tank and windshield and is temporarily stored at his home.
“We may not need it often, but it is handy when we need it,” he said.
“The price was right too,” Mr. Gilkey added.
